Closing the Dream Gap: Because Every Girl Deserves to Dream Big

Ever notice how little girls believe they can do anything—astronaut, president, superhero—but somewhere along the way, that confidence fades? That’s the Dream Gap in action.

By age six, many girls begin to doubt their intelligence and abilities, not because they aren’t brilliant, but because society has been quietly whispering that brilliance isn’t for them. The world starts telling them to “be nice” instead of bold, to shrink instead of shine. And that’s a problem for all of us—because when girls hold back, so does the world.

Why Should You Care? (Even If You Don’t Have Kids)

This isn’t just a “girl problem.” It’s an everyone problem. When half the population is questioning their worth, we miss out on the leaders, innovators, and changemakers who could transform the future.

A world where girls believe in themselves is a world with:
✨ More breakthroughs in science and technology
✨ More women leading companies and making policies
✨ More voices shaping the future in ways we all benefit from

So yeah, we all have a stake in closing the Dream Gap. And the good news? We can do something about it.

What’s Holding Girls Back?

The research is clear: by first grade, many girls stop seeing themselves as "really, really smart." They start opting out of challenges, stepping back instead of stepping up. But it’s not because they lack talent—it’s because the world around them has been setting limits they never asked for.

Barbie's Dream Gap Project and studies from NYU show that girls thrive when they see strong role models, hear empowering messages, and have people who believe in them. That’s where we come in.

How We Close the Dream Gap—Together

💡 At Home:
Ditch the "Be Careful" Reflex—Encourage adventure, let them climb, take risks, and learn that failure is just part of success.
Expose Them to Role Models—From engineers to athletes, show them women who break barriers.
Challenge Limiting Language—Swap “She’s bossy” for “She’s a leader.”

🏫 In Schools & Activities:
Encourage Participation in STEM, Leadership, & Sports—Girls belong everywhere.
Speak Possibility, Not Limits—“This might be tough” is different from “Girls aren’t good at this.”

🌎 In the Community & Workplace:
Mentor a Young Girl—Your support could be the reason she dreams bigger.
Support Brands & Policies That Empower Girls—Vote with your dollars and your voice.
Challenge Stereotypes—In media, in conversations, in hiring. Representation matters.

Join the Movement: One Girl at a Time, One Change at a Time

We don’t need to change everything overnight, but every moment of encouragement, every opportunity, every belief we instill in the next generation matters.
